SMART GOAL SETTING

I had been to Pune, and visited one of my alma mater Prabhodini. Coincidently happen to be a reunion of ex-students and met my Gurus. One of them, Vivek Kulkarni, A Doctorate from IIT, dedicated life to society welfare. So there was a plain vanilla discussion on Goal Setting.

This abstract is on what Vivek Kulkarni message was:

He asked 3 basic questions,

  • Do we review our life?
  • How can our career help VISION 2020 of Kalam?
  • What kind of personality should we have?

He introduced an acronym SMART for Goal Setting.

S-Specific

M-Measurable

A-Ambitious

R-Realizable

T-Timebound

Goal setting can encompass on this framework.

Now the most important part is, focus on long term. Which we generally refer to as immediate 10 years. He said we still need to look longer, life just doesn’t end at 50.

Immediately a young gal asked if change needs to be done, it has to start early and not later. Of course there was a series of arguments which went offline.

Now another meaning of SMART in personality development is:

S-Sensitive

M-Motivated

A-Adaptability

R-Regenerative

T-Transparent

Critical elements of a Human Resource are

M-Motivation

A-Attitude

S-Skills

K-Knowledge.

A lot of nice quotes were

  • “Today is the first day of the rest of my life”
  • “Past is Past”
  • “How old are you?” “I am not old, I am x years young “
  • “10 years experience, you mean 1 year experience repeated over 10 years”

On building goals as per career, he said

Why is that most important people are not doing anything compared to education?

A lot of emphasis was personalities like Baba Amte and Abhay Bhay.
